Yarrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggggh!

My Rum Diary # 15 - Sea Legs

Avast ye Scurrrvy Swine!

Had a rough time rolling out of me bunk this morrrnin' as I knew once I get going, I won't stop until Monday sometime.

Oh joyous day callooh callay!

It's gonna be a doozy.

Commander California and I have made plans.  Still waiting to see if we can spring the Spaniard for the trip.

I'm hopeful.

I've been vacillating on whether or not to share this, but I'm having a drop-in to get my Sea Legs before heading to the island.  And for this event I'm making an encore batch of my Special Bumbo.  It's a hit.

And I guess maybe I should just share me recipe.  It's a variation on a theme, but here goes:

Per Cup
2 oz                  Rum
.5 oz                 Lemon Juice
.75 oz               Pure Cane Sugar (2 TSP)
.25 oz               Grenadine (1TSP)
5.5 oz               H2O

Sprinkle            Nutmeg
Sprinkle            Cinnamon
Sprinkle            XXX

Who does per Cup really?  But you have to start somewhere I guess.
 --

Per Batch
1 Bottle 1.75L              Rum
1Bottle 4 oz                  Lemon Juice
2 Cups (1 Box)             Pure Cane Sugar
½ Cup                          Grenadine
10 Cups                        H2O

½ Cup                          Nutmeg
½ Cup                          Cinnamon
½ Cup                          XXX

Garnish with Fresh Limes

And because I don't have a bigger mixing bowl, I tend to make the 1/2 batch most often, even when ultimately making 2 full batches as I did for today.  Arrrrithmetic ya know.  Urrrrgh.
 --
 ½ Batch
½ Bottle 1.75L             Rum
½ Bottle 4 oz                Lemon Juice
1 Cups (1 Box)             Pure Cane Sugar
¼ Cup                          Grenadine
5 Cups                          H2O
¼ Cup                          Nutmeg
¼ Cup                          Cinnamon
¼ Cup                          XXX

Garnish with Fresh Limes

--
A couple of notes on the whole thing.

The nicer the rum, the better the Bumbo.  For parties I usually use rotgut, but if you're making a private stash for yourself, go dark and expensive.

You can definitely cut down on the Nutmeg. It's a strong flavor and the Cinnamon works in a similar way.  You'll have to experiment, but halving and even quartering the called for amount of Nutmeg will work nicely.

The XXX you ask? If you don't know what it is, well you're Bumbo will be a fine draught without it, but it is what makes my Bumbo the BOMB!

A pirate has to have some secrets don't he?  If you want to know that you'll have to kill me or at least have a tipple with the crew of the Confusion.

Har Har!

My Rum Diary # 14 - % by Alc./Vol.

The Teetotaller had an interesting thought being more interested in the bottles (and what pretty bottles they arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrre) than what the contents were.

She lined them up by Alcohol Content and the results were interesting enough I thought I'd share with ye.

Of the 15 bottles I currently have:

the Pango Rhum is 35%

The Barbancourt 5 Star and the Blackbeard are 43%

The Kraken is 47 %

and the big winner is that gorgeous colored Smith & Cross at 57%

Everything else (ten bottles in all) are 40%, the seeming standard.

One more way to look at my trove of boozy booty/beauty!

Yum!

My Rum Diary # 13

At the climax of the second act, in rushes Terrible Teetotalling Tess, the Deathless Wench with a Treasure Trove of Booty for the good men of the Confusion.

Seriously, in addition to Bottle # 8 she also brought us mini-tastes in the forms of Bottles 9 - 15!

What a wench!

The locations represented on our trip now will include the following:

My Rum Diary # 11

I was feeling pretty badly about not representing PR with my personal history and so I stopped at Food For Less and broke down and got Bacardi Select to add to my countries.  Puerto Rico seemed an important place to represent.

Also, we may have lost our first mate.  We'll have to wait and see.  Black thoughts.

My Rum Diary # 10 - Caribbean Queen

I was looking at the bottles I've collected so far for the trip this weekend and while I think we've gotten a nice range of color as well as regional representation, we are still missing quite a few.

Here's the range I've covered so far:

Bottle # 1 - The Kraken - Black Spiced Rum - American Novelty Brand - Lawrenceburg, IN

Bottle # 2 - Pyrat - Amber - by Patrón - 15 blended rums aged in Limousin Oak and American Sweet Oak Barrels - British West Indies

Bottle # 3 - Barbancourt Réserve Spéciale - 5 Stars - Aged 8 years - RHUM - Haiti

Bottle # 4 - Grande Reserve Plantation Rum - Aged 5 years - Barbados

Bottle # 5 - Brugal Ron Blanco Especial - Brewed by the Brugal family for 120 years - Dominican Republic

Bottle # 6 - Appleton Jamaica Rum - White - Estate Distilled Rum - Kingston, Jamaica

Here's the map.

Which means we're missing the following islands:

Bahamas, Turks and Caicos Islands, Cuba, Cayman, Puerto Rico (I mean Come On!), the Virgin Islands (St. Crois, St. Thomas, St. John, Water Island, Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, Jost Van Dyke), Anguilla, Antigua, Barbuda, Redonda, Saint Martin, Saba, Sint Eustatius, Saint Barthélemy, Saint Kitts, Nevis, Montserrat, Guadeloupe (Les Saintes, Marie-Glante, La Désirade, Dominica, Martinique, Saint Luica, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique, Trinidad and Tabogo, Aruba, Curaçao and Bonaire

so there's plenty of places to represent if you want to contribute!

 : )

And if you'd like to know more about the region or any island specifically, have a look here.

My Rum Diary # 9

Where all the white women at?  I mean, white RUMs.

Well I got a couple.

Stopped by the Cap N Cork on Prospect and Hillhurst.  Foursquare has it listed as CapNCork, Jr. which I found kind of hilarious.

There is, however, nothing Junior about their selection.

I don't particularly like the guys who work there and they don't really know what they're talking about, at least in terms of rum, but there is a *lot* to choose from and mostly over-priced.

The clerk I asked for help kept trying to steer me towards the most expensive bottles, but I ain't no eeedjit.

I decied again on two moderately priced bottles instead of one super expensive one.  I do have a crew to lubricate after all. *ahem*

Anywhoo, here's Bottle # 5 and Bottle # 6.  Both are whites and both will be in mah Belly soon enough!

Yum!

My Rum Diary # 8: Up Spirits! All for me Grog!

Would you like to know the history of Grog or how I came to know the recipe for such delicious Bumbo?

(I do have  a secret ingredient you'll never make me divulge.  Yaarrr.)

For some history of the drink that kept navies going til Black Tot Day in 1970 have a look at that link!

My Rum Diary # 7

On Wednesday I had the opportunity to stop by Topline Wine & Spirits.

A friend turned me on to this place and let me tell you, that if you need help finding something cool and unique, then this is the place to go!  So great.

The owner has been there for 26 years and really knows his stuff.

It's tucked back in a little industrial looking strip off San Fernando between Glendale and Burbank, but don't let the humble location fool you.  If you're looking for something special, this is the place!

There were so many great options, but I finally decided to go for two moderately priced RUMs instead of the one expensive sweet one.

I got Barbancourt Reserve Speciale the Five star version of this Hatian RHUM.  It's supposed to be more of a brandy flavor.  Looking forward to trying it.

And for the win I also got a bottle of Grande Reserve Plantation Rum from Barbados.  It's aged five years and supposed to be a sweet little treat.

These will add a little variety to my experience next weekend.

My Rum Diary # 6

I stopped by the Pink Elephant just South of Franklin on Western.  It's not a great store. Not much selection and the guys who run it can be a bit assy, but I love the name and they *do* deliver liquor.  Just thougth I'd see what I could get my grubby little mitts on.

I found this.  Bottle # 2

Don't judge.  I had to.

Some "facts" about RUM!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rum

My Rum Diary # 1

As many of you know, my birthday is in 24 days.

I will be old.  Perhaps even middle-aged as my family tradition goes.

I have decided to celebrate by going to Buccaneer Days on Catalina Island.

That happens 10/5, 6, 7.

Only a handful of fellow scalawags will be able to actually be there
with me, so I’ve decided to help you with your feelings of loss.

Here’s what I want for my birthday.

RUM.

I want you all to give me Rum.

Any kind of Rum will do.

Real Rum. ShamRum.  Virtual RumRum gift certificates.
Your favorite recipes involving Rum.  Pictures of you and others drinking Rum.
Pouring Rum on your naked parts.  Feeding Rum to derelicts and animals.
To small children.

Whatever you think.

If you want to literally give me Rum, I’ll send you my mailing address.
And I'll love you forever.  Srrrrrsly.

Try to get it to me by 10.4 as I want to take it to the island.

Or I can give you my paypal and you can tell me what kind of Rum
I must buy once I receive your booty.

I just want Rum and I want you to decide what kind of Rum I should have.

I want all kinds of Rum.

I’m going to start buying bottles so I have a vast array.
Cheap.  Expensive. Good.  Bad.  Light.  Dark.  Spiced.  Straight.

Whatever.

Just give me the Rum.

(Oh but no Rum with Coconut.  Not that Malibu shit  . . .

Okay, I’ll drink whatever.  Who’re we kidding!?!)

Also, if you want to have some Rum with me and aren’t on
the crew of the Confusion, i.e. going to BD, just stop by after
4p on Thursday 10.4 and help me get my sea-legs on for the
weekend.

Super Casual, but you better have Rum.

If you’re good I may even mix up some Bumbo!  Yep.

By Sunday 10.7 I want to be marooned and screaming about
the Rum being gone.

But that only works if we have lots of Rum.

The first bottle I bought is the first picture below.

I’m going to keep buying bottles.  Every day I can.

And I'll take pictures.  Rum porn.  *licks chops*

Other suggestions are heartily welcomed, especially from
my Boricuan amigos!

Ay yi yi!

Onwarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrddddddddddddddd!!!
